Right, first things first….Max & Igor are no longer in Sepultura and haven't been for many years so get over it. However Derrick Greene and Andreas Kisser along with Pablo Jr still fly the bright Yellow flag of their country, Brazil, and still churn out supreme heavy metal. Case in point is the latest offering Kairos, a frantic chugging monster of an album that would flatten acres of rainforest in a circle pit of frenzy. This is back to basics metal, the sound is raw & uncomplicated yet unmistakably Sepultura, there are still the distinct tribal influences on title track Kairos and a peek into Chaos A.D territory on 'Relentless'. A cover of Killing Jokes 'Just One Fix' breaks things up slightly and the album loses momentum for a moment, however things are soon back on track with the Scandinavian sounding 'Dialog'.
On repeat listens this is certainly a weighty sounding behemoth of an album. It may not have the same all out thrash qualities of the Sepultura of old, instead embracing a more mature direction in the delivery of their thrash metal for 2011. Andreas Kisser twists his instrument in all directions and still has the ability to pull frantic solos from thin air and Derrick is certainly Sepultura through and through and who would argue? Kairos is certainly the best album to come from Sepultura for a long time. Its brutal no holds barred metal in your face, no longer overshadowed by the past but moving forward into familiar yet uncharted territories.
