Three songs lasting eighty minutes on an album is a tall order for any band, however in the genre of drone, these practices are the norm. Beyond Ancient Space from UK droners Bong does exactly that, with three twenty five minute tracks that will leave those who subscribe to the painfully slow riffs and beats, lapping up every second as the rest of us look on in wonder and no little boredom. There's basically nothing to get to grips with here as the never ending hum of guitar is only punctuated by the vaguest of melody aside a fluttering of drum breaks and cymbal crashes. Vocally things are equally as frustrating and as the songs mature so they cry out for something more starkly different to really make them stand out in the music gloom.
Bong certainly have the potential to bring a considerable amount of power and prowess to the genre, it is just that much of what they present here has already been done before. Even as drone goes, it is virtually impossible to differentiate between the band's songs, never mind between them and other bands in this field. With the clue to their music coming over strongly in the band name, Bong offer up drug fuelled trudge across an unbelievably heavy and brutal landscape which will become a companion to those who advocate this style of music, but certainly won't unlock the door to drone for those still wondering what all the fuss is about.
