Sex Type Thing: Checked Up By Time

St. Petersburg's Sex Type Thing has released their stomping sophomore album upon an un-expecting world an album called Checked Up By Time.

People max out that volume button, this is an album that has been filled with dirty, loud and proud stoner rock, raw and dirty blues and grunged out guitars that by design needs to fill your room. This is an album that is full of big hooks that leave its size ten footprint all over your face. Michael Chigidin's just snarls out his vocals, all angst and attitude ridden; Pavel Voinov rocks out his guitar sounds like a bastard, Dmitry Saulin rings the life out of his bass whilst Vladimir Zinoviev assaults his chosen instrument, the powerful and percussive drum kit.

From the opening siren and powerful chords of Get Rid, Chigidin lets you know that you are in for a ride; this is a band that isn't messing about. Feel the Same offers no let-up either, a song that echoes Brant Bjork from time to time as Voinov's guitar delivers a harder edged sound. Tomorrow's approach balances aggression with calmer passages, a song that is diverse in its approach with its succinct rhythm section. Again the guitar tones are stunning, never complex but working perfectly in their approach. Zinoviev really displays his prowess on the drums as he guides and drives the song to finality.

Only Angel Knows is a more sedate piece, a balance of acoustic and electric, guitar, drums and dreamy Fender Rhodes keyboards erecting a beautiful ballad, that calls to mind Nickelback, in fact if Nickelback had of recorded this, it would have probably been huge. Black River throws attitude back on the table, much in the same way as the opening three salvos did with Chigidin dynamically displaying the strength of his vocals.

The penultimate track My Obsession kicks the doors in and trashes the house as the band confidently struts it stuff, whilst album closer Long Way Home Blues with its harp work, brought a smile to my face, confirming that there is more than one dimension to Sex Type Thing. This is a showcase for the sonics of both band and vocalist and a very fitting closing track calming everything down, ending on a high.

Sex Type Thing is a band that really knows how to rock the foundations, unafraid to bring the house down, offering diversity, all I the blink of an eye
