Originally filmed and recorded for the German television show Rockpalast back in 1980, Live in Germany 1980 is the CD version of the Double Down Live DVD released in 2009. This is a sizzling 16 song set featured a lean & mean ZZ Top in their prime, delivering a wealth of rousing heavy blues rock that touches on many of their greatest songs up to that point. Crunchy rockers like "I Thank You", "Waitin' On the Bus", "Heard It On the X", "Cheap Sunglasses", "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers", "Precious and Grace" are given royal treatment here alongside the more blues based numbers such as "Jesus Just Left Chicago", "La Grange", and "Tush".
Featuring Billy Gibbons' raunchy guitar riffs & tone (let's face it, he's got one of the most recognizable guitar tones in rock), and the gravelly vocals from both he and bassist Dusty Hill, this live set is packed with early classics from ZZ Top that will please any long time fan. The fact that you get lesser known but equally as rocking fare such as "Manic Mechanic", "Lowdown in the Street", "Dust My Broom", and "Fool For Your Stocking" will be reason enough for many to check this CD out, as the band really represent the awesome Deguello quite nicely, along with highlights from Tres Hombres and Fandango. Good stuff here from the always dependable ZZ Top, and a great snapshot from a time when they were one of the most hard working and hard rocking bands on the live circuit.
