Italian sleaze rockers Cream Pie nice subtle name, guys tell it like it is with the title of their latest EP, Unsigned. In fact, the band offers a variety of fan sponsorship levels on its website, so these guys can continue to make melodic hard rock in the vein of Guns N' Roses, L.A. Guns, W.A.S.P., Motley Crue, Skid Row and Hanoi Rocks without record-label backing. Cream Pie also lists the Beatles and Rolling Stones as influences, but I'm not buying it
Unsigned features six tracks the last three much better than the first three. We all know there's not a lot of innovation in sleaze metal these days (if there ever was), and "Tiger," "See Ya Later" and "The Evil Inside" are by-the-numbers tunes that do nothing to advance the genre. But the heavy ballad "Such a Psycho" shows off vocalist David King's Axl Rose-like lungs and lets the rest of the Cream Pie crew join in on backing vocals. "No Love Remains" finds the band experimenting with more intricate melodies and orchestral arrangements, and it sounds unlike anything else on Unsigned. "Bad Habits" ends the album in true hair-band style, with a head-banging anthem that'll have you thinking about 1988 all over again.
