Horror-jazz. Orchestral doom. Sometimes a band lies so far outside any genre that coming up with a single catch-all name for it is an exercise in futility. Using mostly saxophone, vibraphone and light drums, mixed with other ambient sounds and instruments, Bohren construct a dark, distant, jazz-inflected landscape that's both a little frightening and enchanting to listen to. The english translation of the title would be "Condolences". For me, it fits my ears best as a chillout soundtrack to go with my martini after I've spent the day as a character in a David Lynch movie. The record also features a cover of Warlock's "Catch My Heart" with vocal chameleon Mike Patton joining in. I'm not familiar with the original, but if music like Bohren's needs vocals, Patton is the perfect choice. Music like this could get old after a while, hard to stay in the mind space for it. But clocking in at a little over 35 minutes, the band gives you a just right sized serving of their midnight-soaked jazz dream.
