Debauchery: Germany's Next Death Metal

Last December our very own Scott Ward pummelled the reissue of Debauchery's first album all around the yard saying this:
"No matter how you slice it though this is a very average and simplistic death metal disc with just about nothing to offer. Tired guitar riffs, boring, unintelligible vocals and listless songwriting contribute to a torturous disc that really is hard to find any worthwhile points to bring out about it."

Go on Scott, say what you really mean and get off the fence. Now we have their seventh album Germany's Next Death Metal which is apparently, "designed to serve as a middle finger to today's mass media." Whether it succeeds in that aim is open to debate but I had a massive amount of fun listening to it. The only problem is that I'm not sure if I'm laughing with or at the record. "Zombie Blitzkrieg" is hilarious – can you guess how the chorus goes? "Warmachines at War" (or Vor as it actually says) are amongst the most fun songs I've encountered in ages, so much so that I had to check to see if i wasn't having the piss taken out of me.

In "Warmachines at War" the immortal opening of," Warmachines at War, Warmachines at War, Warmachines at War, Motherfucker, Warmachines at War, Beats,"got me chuckling like crazy every time I listened. Germany's Next Death Metal is full of other gloriously stupid stuff, go on, just look at the titles in the track listing and if you're wanting cheering up in a Death Metal style grab a copy. Oh, the cover of "School's Out" has to be heard to be believed. It turns out that there really is a fine line between clever and stupid.

Debauchery: Germany's Next Death Metal

My Score:

Here's an interesting one…the latest from veteran act Debauchery, titled Germany's Next Death Metal. Can't say I've heard such a unique mix of hard rock & thrash riffs with death metal grows and black metal shrieks flying over the top. This clearly ain't death metal, and the lyrical themes here are just so over the top ridiculous, so I'm not really sure who Debauchery are targeting with this one, but I will say you can have a lot of fun with Germany's Next Death Metal if you just go with it. Try and stop yourself from busting a guy laughing while you are headbanging to songs like "Bloodslaughter Onslaught", "Zombie Blitzkrieg", "Warmachines at War", and "Death Will Entertain"…it will be tough, trust me. The band does a great job on their cover of Alice Cooper's "School's Out", and once you get done hearing that you kind of get a sense of where the band are coming from stylistically on this album. It's basically 70's hard rock riffs with death metal vocals. So, you are either gonna love this, hate it, or claim mild interest initially then cast aside. That's kind of where I'm at.
