Quill, The: Full Circle

Being honest, I've never encountered The Quill before but apparently this is their first album since 2006 and it's a bit of a groove-based winner. Magnus Arnar (vocals), Christian Carlsson (guitars), Jolle Atlagic (drums) and Robert Triches (bass) have combined to make a fully-rounded massive sounding retro sounding beast of an album.

From the opening bluster of "Sleeping With your Enemy" to the final moments of "Waiting for the Sun", Full Circle is a very fine disc. The songs are full of riffs, hooks and are delivered in a concise and crisp fashion. None of the songs hang around too long so if, for instance (like me), you think that the title track is one of the weaker efforts, there's no need to panic because a winner like "Black Star" is just around the car. I've seen The Quill compared to the Foo Fighters (can't see it at all) and Queens of the Stone Age but I'd far rather listen to The Quill than either of those bands.

There are times when we all need something with a bit of a groove in our lives and next time I require one I'll be reaching for Full Circle.
