Origin: Entity

US technical death metal band Origin follow up their excellent 2008 release Antithesis with the equally powerful & brutal Entity, their latest for Nuclear Blast. Once again, the incredible drum work of John Longstreth drives this band to pummeling heights, as his acrobatic fills and relentless blast beats propels the complex, thunderous riffs from Paul Ryan and the monstrous bass grooves from Mike Flores. At just over 36 minutes, Entity starts off with a bang and never looks back, with tracks like "Expulsion of Fury", "Conceiving Death", "Swarm", and "Fornever" bludgeoning the listener with crushing riffs, lightning leads, jackhammer blasts, and evil growls & screams that grab you by the neck and smash your head into a brick wall over and over again. It's a delightful type of pain however, as Origin do this pummeling technical death metal better than most, and it's all so precise & brutal that you can't help but fall victim to their brand of extreme metal. Though there are a few throwaway tracks that are barely over a minute long, you need to look out for the two lengthier pieces here, titled "Saligia" and "Consequence of Solution", where the band mix fast & furious technical death, grind, black metal, and progressive metal, all into one crushing attack. Guitarist Ryan pulls out all the tricks on these two epics, and Longstreth's drum work is just off the charts. And if the blazing closer "Evolution Of Extinction" hasn't completely grabbed you, well, you're just not a fan of technical death metal.

Another fine release from this trio, Entity is mandatory listening for those into Nile, Obscura, Decapitated, Spawn of Possession, Decrepit Birth, Suffocation, and Cannibal Corpse.
