Weiss, Dan: Jhaptal Drumset Solo

The marriage of Indian rhythms and jazz can be a striking combination. Drummer Dan Weiss's new CD is entitled Jhaptal Drumset Solo, the follow up to his first solo album Tintal Drumset Solo. Before now I have not been familiar with his work, either his solo or trio albums. The album title refers to a ten beat pattern in Indian music. Over the past nine years Weiss has learned from his tabla guru, Pandit Samir Chatterjee but says Weiss "The process of transferring tabla repertoire to the drum set is still very new to me and I consider this exploration to be just the beginning of infinite possibilities." This album is not so much a collection of songs, thirty-six of them to be precise, but rather an overall concept that should be listened to as a whole. Describing individual songs would be futile as the album must be viewed in its entirety.

Playing with Weiss is guitarist Miles Okazki who is an accomplished musician in his own right. His gently sweeping guitar passages, often bordering on the ambient, are refined and purposeful, showing the necessary restraint amidst Weiss's often complex rhythms and fills. At times the repetitive nature of the music can be a bit distracting but there is no doubting the artistry of this release and Weiss is an excellent player.

If you are looking for something a little different and totally original, you might want to give Jhaptal Drumset Solo a listen. It is not something to rock out to but when you want to chill out, this trance-like music just might do the trick.
