Iron Dawn is a limited edition EP from Swedish black metal legends Marduk, with three new tunes meant as a stopgap for the fans until their next full length CD. If you were a little perplexed by the direction and experimentation of their previous effort Wormwood (a fine release in my opinion), you'll no doubt love the frenzied, battle-ready war cry of the brutal cuts "Warschau 2: Headhunter Half Moon" and "Wacht Am Rhein: Drumbeats Of Death" here. Straight out of the Panzer Division Marduk album playbook, these two cuts that lead off this EP feature everything we've come to love about this band, including evil vocal rasps, jackhammer blast beats, and furious tremelo picked guitar riffs. Lightning fast and brutal as hell, this is black metal at its most lethal, crushing, and violent. Mortuus is in fine form, spewing all sorts of maniacal venom amidst the blasting and whirlwind riffs. On the third cut "Prochorovka: Blood And Sunflowers", the band slow things down to a crawl, as the more doomy vibe, sound effects, spoken word vocals, agonizing growls, and brooding riffs recall some of the Wormwood material. All in all, there's plenty to sink your teeth into here despite the less than 14 minute running time, and the indication is that Marduk's next full-length should be quite spectacular if the material is as good as this.
