Consecution: Elements

Consecution is an American progressive rock band based out of New Jersey with a new album entitled Elements, the follow up to And the Path Lies Ahead. The band is Aaron Wallen (keyboards) and Rob Benny (guitars, vocals).

Elements is a pretty good album of progressive inspired rock with an alternative flavour, especially in some of the heavier sections. The band does a nice job of blending acoustic guitar with heavier electric riffs that gives the music an overall meatier sound in some of the tracks. The guitar often takes on a fuzzier tone and there are some nice acoustic moments scattered throughout. Keyboards are used mainly to give these songs added atmosphere, enhancing the mood with varying layers of sound and not so much as a solo instrument.

By today's standards this is a relatively short album clocking in at just over thirty minutes. All the songs are good but for me highlights include the moody "Elements – Part II" where heavy guitar rhythms and lighter keyboards enhance the mood and the Floydy "Elements – Part V" with its nicely layered vocals and melodic acoustic and electric guitar.

Although this is a good album there is room for a few improvements. Better production values and a real drummer would do wonders for the band and provide that extra punch. I would also like to see the band explore more instrumentally as they do seem to have plenty of talent. Still, I enjoyed Elements for what is; a fine slice of alternative influenced progressive rock.
