Hrizg: Anthems To Decrepitude

Hrizg is a one-man Black Metal project hailing from the icy depths of, er, Spain. In truth, that's probably the most exceptional thing about this album, although it is a more than competent genre release. The fairly primitive production, which seems de rigeur for this form of music, doesn't mask some strong playing and arrangements; the tempos are nicely varied, and each song is its own identifiable entity rather than simply an identical continuation from the next. Keyboards are utilised effectively in places to add to the dark and sinister atmosphere, whilst the closing three tracks – the gentle acoustic melodies of 'Invierno', the slow-building, stately 'In Solitude', with its narrated vocals, and the spacey, portentous organ work of 'Broken Shield' – both show a nicely different side to Hrizg than more atypically aggressive tracks such as 'I Hate', and point to some interesting directions to pursue on forthcoming albums.
