Whether you call them grunge, stoner, doom, sludge or any other type of metal, The Melvins are one thing and that is unique. There has not been another group like them and I am still trying to decide if that is a good or bad thing. Like their music, I guess it would depend just upon how I feel that day. Anyway, this new live album captures them in all of their sludgy and off kilter glory. Leaning heavily toward their newer material with a smattering of old favorites, The Melvins drone their way into your brain cells and either pass out the other side without leaving much of an impression or they take up residence and leave the listener in a zombie like state under the control of King Buzzo and his minions. Sugar Daddy Live is a chance to hear them preach to the masses as they provide you with a 13 song soundtrack to your next bad acid trip.
Maybe that is being a little harsh but this is an experience, as most Melvins outings are and especially so when they are blasting away in front of an audience. When they take you from the Sabbethesque instrumental "Dies Iraea" to the punk explosion of "Rat Faced Granny" before the off-key madness of their version of "The Star Spangled Banner" you are going to wonder just what somebody slipped into your drink. They have carved out a niche for themselves by being a schizophrenic band and there is nothing that will sway this opinion of them on Sugar Daddy Live. For true fans of the band, this is going to be a must have, for others I suggest you give it a listen, then sober up and listen one more time before making a decision.
