Status Quo: Quid Pro Quo

The first album of new material in some four years from Status Quo finds the veteran rockers in fine form as they roll back the years to deliver their strongest collection of songs for some time. Driving tempos and heads down no nonsense rock and roll is very much the blueprint here as the album explodes into life with the opening pair of "Two Way Traffic" and "Rock n Roll n You" with Francis Rossi's catchy melodies making an immediate impact. What is also evident is that Rick Parfitt is very much back and fully contributing as he takes the lead vocals on standout tracks "Let's Rock" and the quirky "Reality Cheque". With their seemingly never ending bout of touring continuing throughout 2011 it is hoped that the band will shake up the set list and find room for at least 4 or 5 new songs as this is an album that simply has to be played live.

Clearly this is not the sound of a band reinventing themselves but simply going back to what they did best in their 70's heyday and placing the emphasis firmly on quality, something that can perhaps be partly attributed to Rossi having teamed up once again with long time song writing partner Bob Young. "Frozen Hero" and "The Winner" are further highlights amongst a collection of 14 new songs plus a re-recorded version of "In The Army Now" that includes several lyrical changes to bring it up to date.

If you fell out of love with Status Quo back in the 90's (or even earlier) then there has never been a better time to rediscover one of the most successful UK bands of all time. On the strength of Quid Pro Quo this is the sound of a band very much rejuvenated and inspired. A 2CD set also adds an album of live classics recorded in Amsterdam and Melbourne in 2010 and collectors should seek out the limited run of 1000 deluxe box sets that adds the vinyl edition plus other assorted extras. For those in the UK the album is available exclusively via Tesco, both in-store and online.
