Seemingly appearing from nowhere, French Black Metallers Cruxifiction only release prior to this was a demo – The Great Agony – in 2007. And, as you'd expect from any BM band worth their salted wounds, that glorified all things adversarial to that unholy path known as Christianity. Their first album for the De Tenebrarum Principio label, The Coming, then, is no different in its blasphemous attack and is a malicious manifestation of traditional black metal with a few surprises thrown in. In the elaborate and epic structures, beautifully orchestrated guitars sit aside sharp tremolo-picked riffs in this morbidly atmospheric collection. Yet it's the haunting organs, Arabesque scales, galloping riffs, sultry melodies, lavishly beautiful acoustic mid-sections, and lyrical lead work that differentiate Cruxifiction from the black mass. Hammering the nail right through Christ's flesh, this elegant and blackly regal fusion of extremities makes The Coming a mightily impressive work.
