No Inner Limits: Of Yesteryear

German progressive metal band No Inner Limits has released a compilation of works that came from their three previous discs and you have to wonder why. Maybe the answer is in the music itself. Although they have a very good feel of the progressive metal genre and a lead singer who could easily fill in for Geoff Tate if Queensryche ever needs it, there music is uninspiring but still quite listenable. Daniel Fischer certainly has the pipes, he just needs a more exciting backdrop for his voice.

I am not saying this band is bad by any stretch of the imagination. They are very capable but lack any kind of individuality. The music sounds too much like an imitation of others out there. I did like a few tunes on here especially "Divine Prophecy", "The Phoenix is Rising" and "At the Sea". These songs show a much higher degree of originality then the rest of the disc. Once again though, there is not a bad tune on here, just a bunch of run of the mill prog metal that will be stored away after a couple of listens. There is a ton of potential and I would not be surprised if they come up with something mind blowing in the future but this disc shows that they still have some work to do.
