Faithful is the third ECM release for the Marcin Wasilewski Trio. This Polish outfit, who have also recorded as part of the Tomasz Stanko Quartet, are made up of pianist Wasilewski, double-bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michal Miskiewicz. Much of what you get on Faithful is classy, melodic, and upbeat jazz, featuring plenty of memorable lines as well as soaring solo explorations.
"Night Train to You" is the perfect representation of all that this trio can accomplish. This near 11-minute gem features pulsating grooves from Kurkiewicz & Miskiewicz while Wasilewski does double duty comping rhythms and launching into blinding solos. You'd swear you were listening to a vintage Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, or Joe Zawinul recording from the late 60's. The title track is a gorgeous slice of meditative jazz, with heart tugging piano lines and Miskiewicz' intricate cymbal work. The other lengthy tune on Faithful is the adventurous "Mosaic", a charming number that lets the listener enjoy some spectacular piano explorations and slippery double-bass grooves. Another major highlight is the engaging & quirky "Big Foot", a real workout for the rhythm team as it features some muscular bass lines and tricky drum fills to go along with Marcin's complex piano arrangement.
If you are looking for a strong piano trio recording here in the first half of 2011, make sure you put Faithful on your radar. The Marcin Wasilewski Trio have themselves a winner with this one!
