Sassy: Diggin' Deep

It's easy to think that belting out some power poppy punk is a simple matter, but in practice the opposite is often true. Take for example the female duo Sassy, who fall someplace between the Ramones and The Andrews Sisters for proof that simple ideas battered out with energy and verve doesn't always make for an entertaining listening experience.

The twosome in question are Trixie Delicious (Lynda Mandolyn (Fabulous Disaster)) and Kitty Largewood (Christa DiBiase) who between them handle guitars, drums and all manners of harmony vocals. Basically the thirteen tracks on Diggin' Deep are boisterous, or more accurately girlstrous riff a minutes with some clattering drums behind them and twin female lead vocals leading from the front. In essence that sounds like a safe bet for some real feel good party music that has you shaking your ass in an altogether rather unseemly way. However too often when this album try to jump for joy, it slips and falls flat. The riffs are monotonous, the drums are laboured and in truth the vocals are actually too nice for the music it fronts. That may be an odd observation, but when the first thing you think of when they start singing over a four on the floor based gritty riff in the album opener "Honey Bee" is The Andrews Sisters "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", then I'm not really convinced that was the effect hoped for, or indeed one that makes any real impact.

Things don't really improve much from there either with the likes of "Lullabee" coming over like the Ramones with all the fun sucked out and the tedious repeated lyrics of "It Really Hurts" being remarkably aptly titled.

I can't help but think that the real way to get a handle on Sassy would be to watch them tear up a sweaty venue with the same energy and belief that is in evidence throughout this album. However after repeated listens to this CD the only Diggin' Deep I'll be doing is to make the hole in which to place this album.
