After a ten years hiatus, the Austrian trio known as Dornenreich is resurrecting with Flammentriebe. Main man Eviga (guitars, bass &vocals) is once more supported by violinist Inve and drummer Gilvan.
Just by the fact of having a violinist in the trio's line-up is an indication of a special act. Add to this the fact of having the "poetic black metal" label and you have even more reasons to be interested in that group. On Flammentriebe, you will hear a pleasant blend of musical textures, as well as different emotional levels. The overall feel is of a black metal nature, with paces going from moderate to the usual furious tempos. The good news is that Dornenreich is never sticking to the relentless mode. The violin is present on every single track, adding that poetic and melodic vibe associated with this band. To my own selfish pleasure, Eviga has included acoustic guitar parts to each composition; only to increase the melodic and atmosphere aspect of his art. With such a combination of ambience and tonalities, there was no need to add electronics or keyboards. You will also be offered those juicy moderate parts, filled with crushing riffs as an extra on some of the best songs. I especially enjoyed tracks 3 to 5 for these reasons. On them, numerous acoustic /violin musical breaks are to be enjoyed, as well as some great crunchy guitar playing. "Wolfpuls" is my overall favorite off that trio. Closing track, "Erst deine Träne löscht den Brand" is another tasty piece of music. Being the most acoustic number and almost an instrumental one, I couldn't find a better way to end this album.
Flammentriebe will be well received by black metal heads as well as by the fans of melodious music.
