Lez Zeppelin: Lez Zeppelin I

It was 1969 when the band Led Zeppelin burst on the scene with a debut disc that redefined heavy metal. There had never been an album like it and even 40 years later the influence of this work still ripples through the music industry. Proof lies with this recreation from the New York tribute band Lez Zeppelin. The all female group delivers an almost note for note reproduction of that historic album with lead singer Shannon Conley providing a little bit of a twang to her rendition of Robert Plant's vocal gymnastics and guitarist Steph Paynes proving she is a dynamite student of the Jimmy Page school of wizardry as she faithfully delivers a mirror image of the fretwork originally laid down by Mr. Page.

The main question is there any reason for this album? Once the novelty wears off the answer is a resounding no. They might be the ultimate warm up band for events such as Rocklahoma where old time metal heads will get a kick out of the combination of classic rock and roll known to them all with the uniqueness of an all female cast delivering it but in the end they just do not bring enough to the table to warrant more than a very occasional listen.

There is no doubt that they would be a lot of fun live. With a gimmick that works and the talent to pull it off, I would gladly head down to the local watering hole to hear them. That is not enough though to make me want to own a disc that would only come out when you want to shock the Led Zeppelin fans that drop by.
