Lynch, Brian: Unsung Heroes

Grammy Award winning trumpeter Brian Lynch has been known in the music business for the past thirty years and has released seventeen CDs to date. His latest CD Unsung Heroes pays homage to trumpet masters of the '40s all the way to present day focusing on players who have not received the attention of say, Louis Armstrong or Miles Davis. It is clear that besides being a fabulous trumpet player himself, Lynch is also a knowledgeable student of the genre focusing on lesser known musicians who have produced some excellent music through the years. The list includes Tommy Turrentine, Idrees Sulieman, Louis Smith, Joe Gordon and Charles Tolliver. It should be pointed out that this CD is volume 1 and that volumes 2 and 3 are available for digital download at www.hollisticmusicworks.com.

Backing Lynch is a full band which includes Vincent Herring (alto sax), Alex Hoffman (tenor sax), Rob Schneiderman (piano), David Wong (bass), Pete Van Nostrand (drums) and Vincente Rivero (congas).

While this CD is a brass lovers delight, there are other reasons to delve into Unsung Heroes. Lynch gives his players plenty of room to shine as demonstrated by the outstanding bass solo in the uplifting "Saturday Afternoon At Four". The delicate drum work of Nostrand shows just the right amount of finesse. In "Household Of Saud" the bass again stands out as well as some fine piano from Schneiderman.

If you enjoy classic sounding jazz look no further than Unsung Heroes. It is both modern yet traditional, a true tribute to some inspirational players and just a fine effort overall. Lynch proves he belongs in the same league as those he looks up to. Highly recommended.
