Few bands merge black and death metal quite like Austria's Belphegor. Though this veteran band has a long and storied career, Blood Magick Necromance sounds like a bomb has been lit under their collective asses, as the music is more forceful, varied, and musically excecuted than any of their prior releases.
Though many acts bludgeon you to death with relentless blasting, furious riffs, and demonic wailing, Belphegor have managed here to create eight songs that are all memorable and distinguishable from each other. That's quite an accomplishment, and not something the band was always able to do in their usually solid back catalog."In Blood - Devour This Sanctity" and " Rise to Fall and Fall to Rise" hammer the listener with effective arrangements that remind of classic Emperor/Morbid Angel, while the band goes for the juggular on the mix of pummeling, frenzied death and slow, crushing doom on the amazing title track. There's a nice use of melody on the somber "Discipline Thorugh Punishment", and if you are in the mood for some pulverizing, old school black metal, look no futher than "Angeli Mortis De Profundis". You also have to appreciate the evilness that is "Impaled Upon the Tongue of Sathan", a monstrous, Satanic slice of death/black metal at its finest.
Not a bum track amongst them, so it's safe to say that Blood Magick Necromance is not only going to be one of 2011's most impressive extreme metal offerings, but it just might be one of Belphegor's crowning achievements. Well done.
