Maddam Ink.: Inklination

Maddam Ink. hail from Allentown, Pennsylvania and just as the town is known for churning out steel, besides being associated with Billy Joel's song of the same name, Maddam Ink. are pretty decent at churning out catchy riffs by the truckload. The band are not reinventing the wheel but the music is pretty good and the melodies catchy as hell. Maddam Ink. formed in 2004 by lead vocalist and guitarist Adam Burke and released their self-titled debut in 2006. Rounding out the band are Matt Scott (lead guitar, backing vocals), Steve Benecke (bass, backing vocals) and Kyle Young (drums). According to their website, the band sites Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin as influences. I am not sure that I hear much of those groups in their music but what I do hear is a modern sounding alternative rock record filled with big crunchy riffs and catchy vocals. The songs are not complicated but the playing is fine and the band has a knack for writing catchy three to four minute rock songs.

The grunge inspired "Carry Me Home" is a solid opening track and is followed by more of the same with "Believe" with its fuzzy guitar sound and catchy melody. "Falling" features excellent lead and backing vocals while the punk rock aesthetics of "Touch" kick up the intensity level. The band opts for a more acoustic approach on "Speak" and "Save the World" with both having a nice blend of acoustic and electric guitar. My favourite song is "Coletrane", a real catchy number with a superb vocal arrangement and guitar riffage reminding me of the Canadian band Moist.

If you are looking for some fresh alternative rock and roll with excellent vocals and big hooks Maddam Ink. may satisfy your craving. This is a solid young band who have the potential to do well on rock radio. Recommended for those who enjoy the music of Pearl Jam, Stone temple Pilots and other bands of that ilk.
