The One Through Tens: Fighting For A Golden Age

The One Through Tens are a Nashville foursome playing music firmly rooted in classic rock but with influences of metal, alternative, blues and punk. In the band are Will Floyd (vocals), Adam Louis (guitars), Ben Lowry (bass) and Abby Leigh Hairston (drums). Fighting For A Golden Age is the band's first full length release.

The music here is riff based rock but the band are more interesting than your typical run of the mill rock band. Adding to the band's muscle is the pounding rhythm section Lowry and Hairston and combined with some bone crushing riffs the music can get pretty heavy at times. Floyd has an interesting voice that has been compared to the late Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon. I also hear a mixture of Jack White (The White Stripes) and Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes).

The album starts with the rocking punk inspired "Run From Your Master" with the energetic riffs coming fast and furious. In the heavy "Religious Fervour" Led Zeppelin comes to mind, especially in the Jimi Page-like guitar riffage. The slow yet scorching bluesy riffs really catch fire on this one. In "Eye For An Eye" the sound is a little cleaner and the instrumentation more sparse but no less rewarding. The catchy "Mr. Dragonfly" is an eclectic mid tempo rocker dominated by '70s style riffs and fiery lead guitar. Other songs include the classic rock pastiche of "So Damn Sad" which reminded me of The Black Crowes and the slow burning psychedelic blues rock of "Bad Day". The album ends with "Liars And Thieves", a nice dose of blues rock showcasing some crisp guitar work and the soulful saxophone of guest musician Derek Haight.

If you are into bands like The Black Crowes and Wolfmother and like '70s hard rock there should be nothing to keep you from picking up Fighting For A Golden Age. The One Through Tens have energy to spare and their fresh take on classic hard rock is quite a delight. I really enjoyed it.
