Born Of Scars: Born Of Scars

"Singer looking for an aggressive rock band" were the words in the advert from singer Renee Davis that brought her together with guitarist, keyboard player Pietro Sirianni, bassist Nick Geluso and drummer Steve Papa to form Born Of Scars, with this self titled seven track EP being the band's debut release. Style wise this guitar oriented straight up modern rock outfit veer from the big punchy riffs of "Fall Again" to the melodic rock power ballad with a touch of Paramore of "The Rain" and much in between. There are snatches of a more punky approach on "Gone With Innocence", while "Face" opens the disc with the sort of anguished metal that gets the kids frothing at the mouth these days.

Renee is a real talent with her full throated roar being tempered with a bluesier edge that is reminiscent of Alannah Myles and Sirianni, Geluso and Papa are an impressively tight trio. However whilst all of the seven songs on offer here are well put together and the band have obviously put a lot of time into knocking them into shape, there really isn't a truly killer moment on this disc that blows you away. The real issue though is that the recording itself isn't quite up to scratch, with the vocals being way too far out in front of the music and in places the guitar and bass sound being just too muddled to create the impact required. In the days before the internet promoted self releasing and producing, discs such as this EP would have made up an impressive demo to sell at gigs and try to gain some notice, but as an actual debut release the genuine talent on display is rather buried.

This is a band with bags of promise, an ear for a catchy melody and the ability to make songs that are smart and well crafted, however while Born Of Scars may be destined for bigger things down the road, unfortunately this release won't be the one to get them there. The fact that their band name makes them sounds like a death metal act won't help either.
