This band got its name from the terrible plague that devastated Europe in the 14th century. It was formed back in 1997 by three German musicians: Atrax (guitars & vocals), Mp on drums and Scum (bass/guitars). The have previously released a series of discs.
Their themes evolve around death, hatred for religion, despair and similar subjects. On this fifty minutes plus opus, Pest is proposing ten tracks of the darkest metal style, black metal. What at first appears as furious, hateful and hyper blasting unfolds into a more subtle and varied musical direction. Well, opener "Tenebris Obortis" is a dark and ambient piece actually. Somewhere along the road, this album started to grow on me. I discovered melody, wickedness and good music. The ghostly rasps are perfect to project that tenebrous vibe. The lead guitar presents some harmonious arpeggios, while the rhythm instrument is pretty crunchy. A bit of atmospheric keyboards give a nice touch of ambience whenever they appear. To my greatest pleasure, Tenebris Obortis contains numerous musical breaks, which are done at mid-tempo. In a couple occasions, Pest is even venturing into a Nordic/epic mood, such as in these great compositions: "Bonded" and the closing track "Entering Forest".
Tenebris Obortis is an album to check out for, if you're looking for a tasty German Nordic black metal release.
