Powell, Julie: Heart Of A Woman

Julie Powell has no problem writing or interpreting songs. At times she's like an updated, Southern Joni Mitchell. But Heart Of A Woman falls a little bit short in the strength department, with Powell often sounding wounded in her own material, rather than strong, full of resolve, as she sounds in her take on spirituals such as "In The Garden" and "Weepin' Mary." We're bounced between those worlds for a short time, then set free, wondering why Powell didn't dig her heels in and play rough a little more rather than letting go so quickly and so gently. We haven't heard the last from Julie Powell, let's just hope she roars a little more next time.
