Fantasist: Giggle Juice

Moody modern rockers Fantasist are newly signed to Rocksector, the independent label that has been responsible for introducing some hugely impressive talent over recent times; Fury UK, Nightvision and 4Bitten to name but three of the artists on their roster. Comprising of the standard bass/guitar/drums line-up, Fantasist can trace their roots back as far as 2003 when all three members attended the same college before coming together as a band a couple of years back. Following on from some impressive gig reports to their credit they now release debut album Giggle Juice.

Musically Giggle Juice is an album high on grooves that twist and turn, stuttering riffs and discordant rhythms. Stylistically the band has shades of art-rockers XTC about them with an inherent quirkiness and at times frantic energy , best exemplified on the rumbling opening duo of "X's & O's" and "See-Thru" that kick-start the CD with an ambiguous menace. Elsewhere, the math-metal meltdown of "Ego" and inventiveness of the yearning "The Void" make for a profoundly rewarding experience, with the trio effortlessly crossing the boundaries between alternative, melodic and metallic. They save the true gem until last with the six minute plus "Private Life" that develops from a gentle, ambient, beginning into a hypnotic and visceral blow-out before coming back down to earth again with a soothing piano coda. Some remarkable stuff here and even more so when you consider this is a debut album from a young band.

Another inspired acquisition to the Rocksector stable, Fantasist can be checked out at their MySpace link below and taking the time to do so is highly recommended.
