Dotma: Sleep Paralyses

Gothic Metal band Dotma comes from the land of a thousand lakes, in the northern territory of Europe called Finland. The same country that has brought us more than one world class Gothic act.

Dotma is a five piece band, with of course the inevitable female frontwoman, You'll never find a male sing the way these Gothic Metal women can. It is almost classical, almost an opera at times. >[? The music of these Gothic Metal bands also has many strings into the world of the classic composers, like Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin. I sometimes wonder if one of these composers would be able to write a song or at least come up with tunes for these songs. I believe so.

Coming back to Dotma, this album is what I would call a classic example of how you can create a wonderful Gothic Metal album. Now Gothic music not the musical stream I listen to most often, but from time to time I really love the music, probably depending on the weather, but certainly my state of mind. I need to be ready to listen closely. The personnel in Dotma are: Joonas Fykälä-aho, drums – Aapo Lindberg, bass – Leo Saarnisalo, guitars – Harri Koskela, keyboards and singer Johanna Lesonen.

I started the line-up listing with the rhythm section for a reason, as the importance of rhythm sections is often misunderstood. These guys lay down the backbone for all the music, therefore if they miss out or play lousy the music becomes worse. I dare say Joonas and Aapo are a fantastic rhythm couple. They know how to drive the music in a forward direction and give room for the others to show- off.

There's a load of guest musicians present on this debut album, making it even more worthwhile. In the song "Reborn" Johanna is joined by Vladmir Lumi as a male voice, which makes this song really stunning to listen to. Vladmir's dark voice and Johanna's high voice the opposites of each other and really work well together.

Sleep Paralyses does not paralyze, nor does it make you sleepy. What it does is keep you awake big time and takes you on a Goth journey for nearly 52 minutes. My best tracks "Reborn" and "Kingdom of the Sky".
