You gotta love live releases from the vault like this one, a scorching 1981 set from seminal Southern Rockers Atlanta Rhythm Section. Thanks to the folks at Retroworld/Floating World/Fuel Records, this killer New York City concert can now be enjoyed by genre fans clamoring for vintage live recordings of his always impressive band.
Kicking off with a wild rendition of "Champagne Jam", complete with a rip roaring bass solo from prog rock enthusiast Paul Goddard, as well as a multitude of fiery slide exchanges between guitarists Barry Bailey & J.R. Cobb, things don't let up one bit from there. Many will of course remember the catchy pop tunes "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight", "Imaginary Lover", and "So Into You", each a huge hit for ARS back in the day, and they deliver on them big time here. Those into the more hard rocking Southern Rock style will love the Lynyrd Skynyrd influenced "Homesick" and the crunchy Molly Hatchet styled boogie of "Large Time", both with hot guitar licks and strong vocals from Ronnie Hammond. Other highlights here include the smooth pop of "Spooky", the catchy hard rocker "Higher", and the textured "Alien". Atlanta Rhythm Section's knack for crafting memorable hooks and cementing them in songs that also feature virtuoso musicianship is perfectly on display here, and if you thought they were merely a studio act think again. This was a live force to be reckoned with.
Included here is a great booklet with an essay from Alan Robinson as well as plenty of live photos. Live at the Savoy is a must have for all Southern Rock and ARS fans.
