Lopez, Lance: Salvation From Sundown

"A very exciting and intense blues guitarist."
Jeff Beck

That is quite the compliment coming from the likes of Jeff Beck and after listening to Lopez's new album Salvation From Sundown, well, I could not have said it any better myself. Folks, Lopez is the real deal.

Lance Lopez was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and is now based out of Dallas. He has played as a professional musician since the age of 14 and at the age of 17 toured with Johnny Taylor and has spent 3 years as the band leader for Lucky Peterson. Salvation From Sundown is his 4th release and the first on a major label, MIG.

This is as pure a blue's rock album I have heard in a long time and man does it rock. The songs are built around Lopez's bluesy riffs and his gritty almost guttural voice adds a feeling of honesty to these 12 tracks. This is music from the heart and after listening to Salvation From Sundown I could not help but feel good all over. The experience is sort of like listening to Stevie Ray Vaugn, a definite influence, in that you just know he puts his heart and soul into his playing and singing. Lopez lets his guitar shine throughout as the riffs keep on coming with a vengeance.

The album begins with the fiery hard rocking "Love Of Mine", written by the late Buddy Ace. This is high energy stuff and a fine choice to open the album. The Albert King penned "Heart Fixin Business" with its slow burning blues riffs and deliciously fast soloing is another winner or check out the tasty guitar and deep bass groove in the excellent "So Alone". Ray Charle's "It Shoulda Been Me" features superb piano from Rick Steph and almost has a George Thorogood feel whereas the balladic "Neverlove" offers one of the CD's more tender moments.

If you like the blues this is a must have. Enough said.
