With a vocalist who sounds a lot like Joey Tempest of fellow Swedish band Europe, Degreed makes upbeat melodic hard rock that gets better with each listen. Robin Ericsson may have been a top-six finalist in 2008 on Swedish Idol (that country's equivalent of American Idol) but he's also a rocker who was able to use that national spotlight to help his band reach new levels of creativity.
Just listen to songs like "Just Imagine," "Story of Life" and "My Fall" — all juicy pieces of ear candy that bridge the musical divide between 1986 and 2010. Fans of Europe will obviously eat this stuff up, but so will listeners who value smart and snappy songs that make them feel good. What's more, in a classy nod to one of Degreed's influences, the band presents a remarkably faithful version of Steve Perry's "Captured by the Moment," in which Ericsson disguises his voice to sound like Journey's most famous singer.
MelodicRockRecords.com seems to have a keen knack for finding bands that the rest of the world should have heard before now. Degreed has been around since 2005, and hopefully more people will find out about these guys soon.
