Torture Killer: Sewers

Finnish death metal outfit Torture Killer may have parted company with one time Cannibal Corpse and Six Feet Under vocalist Chris Barnes for their third album Sewers, however in terms of their music, there's no denying that Six Feet Under are still a huge influence on the band. Big riffs with big grooves are what Torture Killer are all about, with their slow grinding guitar attack having an impressive amount of menace and the odd hint of melody. In place of Barnes, Juri Sallinen who was the band's original vocalist (although Matti Liuke featured on the band's debut album) has returned, bringing a less tortured style that is more a spoken growl than anything else. It does have to be said that it is hugely effective style and one of the main weapons the band possesses.

It is impossible to pretend that Torture Killer offer the death metal genre anything particularly new, or innovative, but if you are looking for something with a similar level of brutality as Six Feet Under whilst adding a few little twists to the mix, then you could do much worse than spend some time in the Sewers. The slow grind and melodic guitar bursts of "Scourging At The Pillar" and the metronomic pummel of the title track, where Sallinen adds a few different aspects to his delivery are particularly impressive, but "The Art Of Impalement" which alters tempo and focal point on numerous occasions is the album's stand out track. In fact more songs with this varying outlook would have elevated this album to the next level.

Still not quite the finished article Torture Killer are none the less an outfit more than capable of kicking up a storm and are well worth keeping tabs on.
