German cross over metal band Such A Surge had quite a following in their home country with their blend of rap and metal that is surely much more palatable sung in their native language. Luckily they do tend to lean toward the metal end of the spectrum and when the pendulum swings to that side this is a band that you will have some fun with. They do not blow you away with their technical ability nor do they provide you with anything new or ground breaking but what they do have is a huge amount of passion and energy and this translate well onto this limited edition gold disc from Metal Mind productions.
As I said when they lean to the metal this disc is not a bad choice at all. Like with the punk influenced "Was Jetzt?". Here they proceed at a full tilt boogie which has an impossible to ignore beat. I would probably be singing right along with the chorus if I knew a lick of German but for now I will just pump the fist and give them one of my best head bobs.
They do give you a bit of English vocals as with the barn burner "Instant Replay". A few more songs like this one and this band might have been a force to be reckoned with. This brooding, chugging bit of metal is one of the highlights of the disc as they thankfully abandon the rap for a more nu-metal sound. Occasional screams for effect hit you hard along with some blazing guitar work and even a bit of female vocals from Michelle Leonard to help this one out. Too bad they can't maintain this intensity for the whole album.
Another surprising moment comes with the song "Mewtag" which is an acoustic/slide guitar with an almost Kid Rock feel. Very similar to what the Kid is doing now-a-days with his country tinged music. Sung totally in German this is a very strange combo that at least makes you pause to grasp just what is going on.
Metal Minds as usual with this re-releases gives you a couple bonuses on the disc. After a very lengthy bit of dead air is the track "Stark Sein" which is another of the rap/metal songs that just manages to blend in with the majority of this album. The other add on is a video for the song "Mission Erfullt". This was interesting just to watch once but nothing really more than that.
This is a decent release from a decent band but that is about all I can say. I won't be looking to pull it out very often but would not complain if someone else threw it in.
