Nicht are a relatively new band out of France. Consisting of Iggy Sharpe Blake on vocals, Laetitia on guitars and Eudes on guitars and drums, their Catalepsy Sinks EP is their first release to highlight their unique brand of gothic and symphonic sounding metal.
Although it's a bit on the short side at just over twenty five minutes, Part 1-Catalepsy Sinks is apparently the precursor to a full length album due in 2011. With not a lot of time to make an impression the band certainly doesn't waste a second. They've put together a cohesive collection of songs that demonstrates a flair for writing memorable melodies and crafting diverse sounding arrangements. The guitars are aggressive enough throughout and are often augmented by liberal amounts of sampled keyboards courtesy of someone by the name of Dam. Blake's vocals alternate between soaring clean vocals and almost guttural growls on "Last Breath" and on "Out Of Reach" and "Hope" he's joined by female singer Sombr I Yahn which gives these tracks a distinctly different flavor.
I have to be honest that I'm not a big fan of gothic metal in general, but Nicht managed to keep me interested all the way through. This is a band with a fair amount of upside and they should have a promising future ahead of them. However it appears that Blake has since parted ways with the band, so they are now on the lookout for a new vocalist. It will be interesting to see how the rest of this plays out and what effect it will have on their plans for that forthcoming album.
