Infernaeon: Genesis to Nemesis

Genesis to Nemesis is one of those releases I really wanted to like, and to be honest, this second CD from Infernaeon is not all that bad. It's just that their brand of symphonic & melodic death metal just seems to be lacking songs that are memorable, which really is the root of the problem.

Are there some good riffs here? Sure. Do the lead vocals cover all the bases, from manic screams, to evil growls, and wicked rasps? Absolutely. Does the band throw in plenty of orchestral keyboards for a spooky effect? Check. So what gives? Well, despite some solid moments, there's just not a lot here to keep you coming back for more, and what is on display, while decent, has been done before and better. The band hasn't really improved all that much since their debut, especially in the songwriting department. A good amount of the lyrics just seem slightly juvenile, especially for a death metal record. There's some good guitar & drum work to be found, and though I never have a problem with keyboards in extreme metal, here they just seem forced, almost to the point of trying to take over the arrangements. Infernaeon do an admirable job on Metallica's "Creeping Death", but was it really necessary here? Best track is without a doubt "The Scar of David", a semi-progressive & brutal death metal number that is easily the most crushing cut on the CD. I only wish there was more of this.

I dug Infernaeon's debut a few years back, and truth be told, I don't dislike Genesis to Nemesis at all. Guess I just felt that in three years they would have hopefully come up with something a little stronger. This is good, but could have been so much better with some more focused songwriting, especially in the lyric department.
