High Watt Electrocutions: The Bermuda Triangle

With a name like High Watt Electrocutions, you could be forgiven for expecting this band's third album, The Bermuda Triangle to be full of high octane, fuzzed up guitars that leave you bristling with electro-static energy, and by all accounts that is exactly what the band's first two releases do. Album number three however veers gently off into another direction, with the near forty minute single track album attempting to represent what a trip into the unknown of The Bermuda Triangle would feel like.

Judging by the dreamy, chiming guitars and dense, almost energised church organ chords that are produced by the synths, it really wouldn't be that unpleasant to find yourself uncontrollably hurtling into an unknown oblivion and if being forever trapped in this mysterious place is anything like as calming and seductive as this album, then there will be plenty of worse ways to see out your last days. If anything that is the problem with this release, as with it being often devoid of drums and completely lacking vocals, the instrumentation is relied upon to explain the concept the music is based on and while the strummed clean and acoustic guitars are undoubtedly inviting and relaxing, there isn't really enough of a counterpoint provided to make the main themes all the more convincing.

That said, The Bermuda Triangle is a tremendously well arranged album that provides a welcome escape from everyday life. Dreamy themes, a crystal clear sound and skilled musicianship provides an interesting, if sedate journey that benefits greatly from sitting with headphones on, completely surrounding yourself with the deep subtle tones that float from this disc.

Not for everyone and indeed those that need a more regimented song structure could end up tearing their hair out by the end of this forty minutes of music, but if your tastes take in the more wandering moments of the likes of Pink Floyd, Spacemen 3, or even some early Porcupine Tree, then there may be much for you to get lost in here.
