Hey, this is pretty damned good! Too bad it got buried under my stack of promos for so long. Fifteen minutes is a short, but very gratifying introduction to Withershin's work. This band saw the light in 2006 and released a demo (Chaos Discipline) the same year. In 2008, they unleashed their debut full length called Ashen Banners.
These demons are coming from Sweden, and I can feel a cool Nordic vibe and inspiration in their music. Opening track, "Wherein I Exalt", is a skull smashing piece of furious and hyper-blasting black metal. This song is completed by arpeggios, leads, pounding percussions, ghostly rasps and varied paces. On this EP, blast beats meet crushing /doom moderate tempos and intensity, often in the same song, meaning good songwriting skills. The title track is a more typical black metal anthem, still made of melodious elements and dark atmosphere. Closing track, "Crossing the Threshold" was the final nail in the coffin, so to speak. The intro is made of nothing more than acoustic arpeggios�to my greatest pleasure. This time around, Withershin opted for moderate tempos, great crushing riffs, whispers and distorted arpeggios, all of which being seductive enough to deserve my vote for the best composition.
The Hungering Void is a short, powerful and tasty EP of high quality black metal, done the Norse way.
