On November 3rd, 2006 Edguy made a stop in Sao Paulo amidst their tour in support of the album Rocket Ride. The tour lasted 109 shows in 31 countries and played before more than 500,000 Edguy fanatics. If this show is any indication of what the whole tour was like, it must have been one helluva ride!
In front of more than 5000 fans packed into the Credicard Hall, Tobais and company remind us all just how much fun an Edguy concert can be. Their fans are a spectacle in themselves. Those that have boarded the Edguy train are as maniacal and rabid as any I have ever seen. The DVD captures this gloriously as the band has 5000 back-up singers pumping their fist and dancing throughout the concert. It doesn't hurt when you have a showman like Sammet leading the charge either. I think he could have given them Jim Jones style kool-aid and this group would have sucked it down without question.
On this night, the band rips through their back catalogue with such conviction that it is hard to not get swept up in the power metal feast that they lay before you. Touching on all their previous releases and even Tobi's side project Avantasia, this is Edguy at their absolute best. With scintillating versions of "Babylon", "Lavatory Love Machine", "Van Glory Opera" and "Avantasia" leading the way, Edguy are the ministers of rock and roll at this heavy metal revival. If a band feeds off the audience that is in front of them than on this night the band was well fed. The energy the band gives off and the reciprocating fuel that the audience feeds the band makes this one of those moments that could help define what heavy metal is all about.
The DVD has a couple bonus features. First off is a documentary that interviews all the band members with their thoughts on the tour and Edguy themselves. Make sure that you have the subtitles on unless of course you know German. Also included are the videos for "King Of Fools", "Lavatory Love Machine", "Superheroes" and "Ministry Of Saints". This rounds out the Edguy experience and with over 3 hrs of material, there is a wealth of stuff to digest.
The CD is a faithful representation of the concert and even though it is sold separately, it is a must have as it has become one of my stable crusin' disc.
When these guys are on, they are one of the best there is. The material from this period is unbeatable in the Edguy arsenal. If you want to see these guys at their peak, this is a must have DVD. It is pure metal and a great addition that could be pulled out anytime you need to get the juices flowing. Remember… these guys will gladly Welcome You To The Freak Show!!
