25 Yard Screamer: Cassandra

Some of the ideas put forth from this progressive metal act aren't all that bad. The guys seem to have listened to the right Rush albums (not just the early stuff, either) and know their way around a riff and under an odd time signature like nobodies business. Unfortunately, the weak production buries a lot of this record before the listener's really had a chance to settle in and get comfortable. Too often, especially in the opening epic "Blacklight," it sounds and feels like we're stuck in the uncomfortable spot twixt the furnace and bass drum in the band's basement jam room. You kind of get the idea that there's something cool going on but you can't hear well enough to tell and you can't sit still in such a way that you can fully concentrate. The second cut, "Insomnia" offers more of the same, albeit with somewhat pallid vocals, mostly pallid because of (again) the weak production. Give these guys some studio time at a real recording pad, let them work with an outside producer and maybe there'll be some gravy in there somewhere.
