Rotten Sound are a four-piece Finnish grind band with heavy death metal
influences (they claim a crust sound as well, but I don't really hear it). I
must admit that for the genre, they manage to give each of the 22 songs on their
debut a unique character. There's not much original or groundbreaking here, but
that's not really what this genre is about, and it does offer a welcome relief
from both the over-long epics metal has come to characterize and also the
plodding, castrated direction hardcore has gone in the last few years.
The band have done a good job producing for their first album, though they do
boast a few singles and EPs in their back catalog. Especially where the drums
are concerned this could easily beat out most major label h/c influenced metal
acts that are all the rage these days. Only one vocalist is credited, but the
lead vox are complimented by a semi-robotic voice that sounds like the one on
Slayer's "Hell Awaits". Guitarist Mika Aalto seems quite proficient considering
his chosen genre, though the bass is mixed low and there are few if any bass
intros or fills. No big deal, as the emphasis is on sheer crushing wattage and
not groove. Not much more to be said about Rotten Sound, except if "Scum" is
your favorite Napalm Death record you're bound to dig "Under Pressure".
