What do you say about a CD that you simply just can't figure out musically? That's sort of the situation I found myself in with We Love Infinity, the latest from the space rock duo Lewis Gill and Neil Packer, better knows as Vivahead. At times I have a hard time calling some of this material music, especially on the opening cut "Seduction" with its endless loops and repeated use of some sort of cartoon character laugh. Things however take a turn for the better on the epic, Tangerine Dream-ish "Pig Giddy", a monolithic journey into space heaven that is actually a really cool tune featuring plenty of repeated keyboard blips and guitar noises. "Cycle" fares pretty good as well, with some spoken word vocals from Gill narrating over an assortment of blips, whistles, squeaks, and other assorted sounds from Packers laptop. However, despite "In the Making" having some complex and almost humorous arrangements that reminded me of Frank Zappa meets the Rascal Reporters, at 8-minutes it just went on a little too long. The guys should have patterned that piece after "Peter", a neat little number with some nice keyboard melodies that gets the point across in just under 4-minutes. The albums other epic "The Question" again suffers from too many odd noises and not enough cohesion, yet you have to give them credit for coming up with something that sounds really different and "out there".
Those into oddball electronic and avant-garde music might find something of interest here. While overall, We Love Infinity left me a bit dumbfounded, there are still some moments of creativity and spacey adventure that can be found in the grooves here.
