Voyager: Element V

Voyager are an Australian symphonic metal band, somewhat similar in style to Rhapsody and Symphony X, but neither as bombastic as the former or as heavy as the latter. Element V is a sort of quasi concept album and armed as I am with only a promotional CD and a bio sheet, all I can tell is that it has all the makings of a Sci-Fi Channel space opera mini series. I like Voyager's "everything and the kitchen sink" approach to writing and arranging. The band occasionally flirts with Celtic folk, World Music and ambient textures while the title track is a bona fide Euro disco dance track. Yes, the band falls into clichéd progressive metal territory on occasion and drummer Geoff Callaghan sounds like an out of control popcorn maker when he should instead be establishing the groove. Vocalist Daniel Estrin just might have the dubious distinction of being the William Shatner of progressive metal; his overly mannered approach to singing becomes a bit tiring over the course of the CD's sixty minute running time. He's not at all a bad singer, but he doesn't have the technique (yet) to boldly go where Russell Allen or Ronnie James Dio have gone before. Still, there's plenty of material here that fans of the genre will enjoy. To the best of my knowledge, Element V is Voyager's debut album. Some of the best bands have had far more humble beginnings; with a better producer, there's no reason to think Voyager can't catch up.
