Effect, The: The Effect

Debut release from the exciting new fusion trio The Effect. From the opening chords of “Lapparnas Bekannelse, it's immediately clear that a few pages have been taken from the Allan Holdsworth playbook. Guitarist Carl Mörner Ringström dazzles throughout, delivering solos that somehow seem to top the one before.

The trio's command of dynamics is evident from the outset. Bassist Henrik Linder and drummer Jonathan Lundberg instinctively know when to pull back and when to raise the intensity, setting the stage for Ringström's flights of inspiration. The atmosphere they create on “Antikhytera, with its volume swells and the rhythm section's tasteful restraint, is simply gorgeous, and it may well contain the album's most jaw-dropping guitar solo.

“Well, Being? immediately follows and raises the bar once more, increasing the pace while showcasing Ringström's remarkable improvisational prowess. “Nebula features one of the album's most memorable melodies; if there's an earworm here, this is it. There's also a touch of Latin flavor, at least to my ears, and I particularly enjoy what Linder and Lundberg bring to the piece underneath the lead lines.

An impressive debut from a band bursting with potential. Fusion fans, and especially guitar enthusiasts, will find plenty to enjoy here.
