The third album from the UK-based progressive-rock trio Forever Symmetry marks a major step forward, as it is released by ProgRock.com’s Essentials -- home to Phideaux, Arena, Discipline, Ghost of the Machine, Magenta, Southern Empire, Unitopia and other worthy artists. It’s easy to see why the Chicago-based label added Fearful Symmetry to its roster. I’ve started, so I’ll finish… crosses over several genres with influences ranging from prog and rock to jazz and world music. It’s led by multi-instrumentalist Suzi James, and she's joined by drummer/percussionist Sharon Petrover and vocalist Yael Shotts, whose delivery sometimes reminds me of Jon Anderson.
Of particular note are the upbeat opener “One By One” (perhaps the most straightforward prog tune here, with obvious Yes influences), “The Demented Third” (the album’s original working title, this instrumental features some of the album’s heaviest riffs), “Everything and Nothing” (a slower, haunting and harmony-filled track that shows another side of the band), and “There Are No Words” (another invigorating instrumental with a soaring Warr Guitar solo).
These are accessible -- even delightful -- songs that deserve the wider audience Fearful Symmetry’s label likely will bring.
