House By The Grave is a killer opener, sounds like it could have come off any of the first few Black Sabbath albums, right down to the heavy grooves, Iommi-styled riffing, and guitar solos. The drums swing and cook and the bass is rumbling in a big way.
"Shapes Of Midnight" follows a thumping and lumbering track, with tons of groove and very catchy. Starr's vocals are quite good here, and he delivers a screaming guitar solo.
"When Evil Wakes"-is a slow and spooky doom track,
while "Don't Let It Control You"is fast, brief, and punky...reminds me of the Misfits meets Blondie!
"Psycho On The Loose" is a heavy and groovy party anthem; this is the band at their most fun...catchy song!
"I Won't Sleep ('Til You're Gone" his one that has a '60s psych feel to it, another fun track that shows the lighthearted side of the band, but it still rocks!
"The Other Side Of The Sky" is back to booming Sabbath-styled doom, a great track, with more tasty Iommi-inspired solos.
"Sleep No More returns to fuzz-drenched doom to close the album, complete with haunting vocal harmonies...another favorite here.
The band seems like they are going back to the spooky yet catchy doom material of old. Very much like a soundtrack to a fun horror movie here with Shapes of Midnight , which I think is what they always wanted to accomplish. Good stuff!
