Dubbed the “godfather of doom,” Joe Hasselvander -- pivotal in both Raven and Pentagram -- has released his first solo album in 40 years. Fire on the Mountain is a one-man-band tour de force of heavy rock that veers from the sound of Hasselvander’s previous bands. For one thing, the man (primarily known as a drummer) does everything here, from sing to play guitar, bass, drums and even flugelhorn. His gravelly voice enters the fray like a giant invading Lilliput with songs that teeter on the brink of doom, NWBOHM and Eighties rock. Most notable is the opening seven-and-a-half-minute title track, with monstrous riffs and epic urgency. From there, Hasselvander (age 69!) doesn’t let up -- ripping through a total of nine solid songs that prove age is merely a number, especially in rock ’n’ roll.
