Ozric Tentacles: Harmonic Mind

You’d be hard pressed to find a band who does psychedelic space rock better than the Ozrics. The band is back with their 17th studio album recorded at the band's home studios, it gradually took shape across Scotland, Devon and finally Glastonbury. “Harmonic Mind features the full touring line-up including drummer Pat Garvey, bassist Corey Wallace, percussionist Paul Hankin, and multi-instrumentalist Saskia Maxwell.

Clocking in at 44 minutes, Harmonic Mind is the perfect length to immerse the listener in musical escapism. The band resonates with the Prog crowd as much as space rockers, and honestly I could see them slotted in a jam band festival and going over like gangbusters. Guitarist/Multi-instrumentalist Ed Wynn is the leader and sonic visionary. I highly recommend listening with headphones, it allows you to hear intricate percussion touches such as the cymbal and hi-hat work that add so much. The drums and bass create hypnotic grooves that provide the energy and flow for the music to soar over. The albums full rich sound hits immediately with the opener “Guardstones. The keyboards and synths are lush and expansive, giving the music added depth in addition to all the sound effects. Wynn’s guitar lines are perfect, not overdone, but solid riffing that hits the mark. The title track has a mesmerizing atmospheric intro that engulfs the listener with various synth sounds, and the band surges underneath propelling Wynn’s heavy guitar when it kicks in. “Tillamook might be Wynn at his finest, it has my favorite guitar soloing of the six tracks. I love the acoustic guitar in the closer “Sumipad, what an incredible vibe to end the album on.

I’ve heard it said that Ozric Tentacles makes the same album over again. Whether that’s true means little to me, as I am glad I’ve got this one. The Ozrics are about creating an atmosphere to set the mood for an incredible musical journey, climb aboard my friends, and enjoy the ride.
