Straight Shooter: My Time - Your Time

German rock band Straight Shooter, formed in 1976 by Streetmark lead singer Georg Buschmann had a string of albums from 1978 to 1983, after which the band called it a day. Buschmann had been ready for a switch and the band released five full length albums:

Get Straight (1978)
My Time - Your Time (1980)
Flyin’ Straight (1981)
Rough ‘N Tough (1982)
5 (1983)

This review looks at their sophomore effort titled My Time - Your Time. The band plays energetic rock music with excellent use of keyboards and catchy guitar riffs spread throughout the album. Buschmann’s vocals are quite distinct and may take time for some listeners to fully enjoy. He has good range and a unique tonality and can belt it out when called upon. The disc opens with the title track and this one had me hooked immediately. An up-tempo electronic-like groove begins in earnest complemented with washes of keyboards and soon Buschmann’s unique voice drives it home. Lots of cool synth work and addictive melodies abound. With “Happy New Year� the band dig deep into their progressive roots laying down tricky rhythmic changes and off kilter grooves. Even the vocal parts are quirky and emphasize Buschmann’s unique phrasing. Again, it may take some time to wrap your head around the vocals. Personally, I dig it. The hummable mid-tempo “Love In My Mind� featuring the Paradise Singers on backing vocals, the band’s creative take on “All Along The Watchtower� with its splendid organ fills and the Deep Purple-like “Why� with its electronic pulsed groove and more fantastic organ are all high points. The funky “Disco-Fever Everywhere� is another infectious tune with highlight reel guitar work from Günther Striepling.

Thanks to Sireena Records for rereleasing the entire Straight Shooter catalog. My Time �" Your Time is a true nugget from the past. Recommended!
